Robyn Blumner’s comments about President Bush’s plans to rebuild in the wake of hurricane Katrina immediately made me recall Dan Ackroyd’s opening comment to Jane Curtain during their heyday Saturday Night Live news casts, “Jane you ignorant … ”.
Well this is intended to be a family blog, but perhaps the tickler is sufficient in this case. First, Ms. Blumner clearly failed to acknowledge that workers need employers. How many idle hands did we see after Katrina that could have started working almost anywhere in New Orleans simply sit or wait for someone to lead them?
Even Mayor Nagin sat idle (well, perhaps not idle, he did complain that others weren’t doing his job for him) when he could have started any number of jobs.
Then Ms. Blumner belittled and dismissed most of New Orleans’ Ninth Ward by stating that without an education they couldn’t possibly be business owners. It’s a good thing we have the highly educated and legally trained Ms. Blumner to point out and identify the capacities of the uneducated.
Worst, Ms. Blumner denigrated President Bush’s idea to create entrepreneurial incentives as a way of rebuilding. Sure some existing businesses will benefit from this plan, but with proper planning and implementation many more new businesses will avail themselves of the opportunities created by Katrina’s devastation.
The economic prosperity President Clinton enjoyed didn’t come about because of his economic genius; it came about because so many entrepreneurs explored and found myriad ways to take advantage of Internet based opportunities. President Bush correctly wants to create a similarly favorable environment for businesses to help rebuild.
By contrast, Ms. Blumner’s derision of entrepreneurship seems to suggest that the better course of action of would be for government to step in and hire people at Davis-Bacon Act wages to rebuild. Hmmmm, more bureaucracy, more dependence on government and far less personal empowerment.
